How To Face Your Fear EVEN IF You Feel Like You’re Going To Poop Your Pants
Have you ever wanted something really, really bad? Maybe when you were a kid it was a bike for Christmas. As you got older it was a boyfriend or girlfriend. Once you became an adult, it could be starting up your own business or change your lifestyle.
What Is The Fear?
First find out what are you really scared of. Are you scared of failure? Rejection?
Maybe you really want to start up a side project for yourself to start earning more money to retire you spouse. It could be because you want to have more time to be able to go to your kids baseball games or dance recitals, but you’re scared you won’t have any support for going against the norm.
You could be wanting to lose weight because you can’t run around with your kids for more than 5 minutes because your knees or back start hurting, but you’re afraid of going to the gym and being embarrassed or think people will make fun of you.
You have to ask yourself, “Is what I want important enough to me to go and face my fear?”
Just Do It
Back when I use to perform in the circus, I use to do whats called “tramp-wall” where you jump off a wall, land on your back on a trampoline then run up the wall. One part was 16ft high from the trampoline, and the middle of the trampoline was 8ft away. The highest part was around 21ft and the middle was around 15ft away. The scary part for me on the 21ft jump wasn’t actually the jump, it was climbing onto the skinny platform. Once I was up there I could breathe.
There is this thing called, “calling a hup.” When I said “hup” it meant I was about to jump which told my teammate he had to jump on the other side. If he called it, that meant I had to go because he was about to. I just had to do it…
You probably have never jumped off a 21ft wall before so let me break it down to something more relate-able. I started doing more Lives on my personal Facebook profile. At first I would go to press the button but them stop myself with excuses. “Maybe I should read my notes some more. Maybe I should change this around. What if I forget this part?” Once I started just pressing the button and going for it, things got easier and I started seeing more “results.”
Perfection Isn’t Real
Thinking everything has to be perfect will always slow you down. You will never do the perfect thing, say the perfect thing, at the perfect time, to the perfect person. It’s just not going to happen. If you think that it will, then you’re crazy, and in that case I don't know what fear you’re trying to face because you’re CRAZY.
You’ve heard it before, practice makes perfect. Take action, do the best you can, and those two steps are going to get you closer to whatever it is you’re trying to achieve.
Let’s Make It Fun
Make fun of your fear! What ever is scaring you, joke about it. Maybe you have to go stand in front of a podium and speak in front of 1,000 people, what’s the worse that could happen you poop your pants? Oh well! No one is going to know the podium is in front of you! You just might have to walk off stage a little funny…
Belittle whatever it is that you are afraid of. This will make you feel bigger than whatever it is that is scaring you, and make it that much easier for you to overcome.
